| Wake Frankfield (August 1, 2001)
Frank Wakefield talks backward. He took the stage at Grass Valley
and announced "Goodbye. I'm Wake Frankfield." If you say something
he agrees with he says "Me neither." If he's picking with you and
you play a good song he says "I didn't like that. Don't pick another
one."
He has a Gibson Lloyd Loar signature 1923 mandolin that he once
filled with sand and baked in the oven. Another time he painted
it pink.
Frank was once David Grisman's mandolin teacher, and he spent a
lot of time in San Francisco in the '60s. He cut a record with Jerry
Garcia. He wears cool western shirts.
He sings it like he means it. He requested that he play not one
but two encores, one of them a 10-minute version of "Orange Blossom
Special," after his first set where he showed up late missing his
banjo player.
At Grass Valley in 2001 he sat at the artists tent and played along
with one of our sets. He will pick mandolin with anyone who walks
up to him, and he'll talk to anyone for as long as they want. I
don't think I saw him all weekend without his mandolin in his hand.
A lot of guys can pick good mandolin, but Wake Frankfield is a
guy I'll remember.
